Alabama Medical Malpractice Insurance Coverage

Coverage Requirements

In the State of Alabama, medical malpractice insurance coverage is not required by law of healthcare providers.  However, most hospitals and practices require physicians to have medical malpractice insurance to get hired and/or privileges.  And, most providers would prefer to be covered in the event of a medical malpractice lawsuit –so they don’t have to navigate the process alone, and pay for any legal fees and/or damages personally out-of-pocket.

If you decide to purchase coverage, the most common
limits of coverage in Alabama are $1M/$3M.  This means that healthcare providers typically purchase medical malpractice insurance with coverage up to $1M per claim, and $3M aggregate.  “Aggregate” means that the policy will pay out up to a total of $3M in one policy year.
