What Is a Telemedicine Endorsement?

As a result of the Covid pandemic, coverage for telemedicine has grown exponentially over the last few years.  That said, not every company will cover telemedicine.

Those that do usually just require adding a telemedicine endorsement to the practitioner's medical malpractice insurance policy.  Thus, providers do not need to purchase a separate telemedicine insurance policy --a provider can simply add the coverage to their med mal policy.

To practice telemedicine, it is imortant to note that providers must be licensed in the state that the patient is in, not the the state they are in.  Thus, if you are a physician in Florida who is seeing patients in Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas, you must be licensed in Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.

Wouldn't My Medical Malpractice Insurance Cover This?

Standard medical malpractice insurance policies typically don't cover telemedicine --even if it is to see patients in the state you are located in.

Thus, if your practice will incorporate telemedicine, you will need to add a telemedicine endorsement to your policy.

Finally, both the state you will be practicing in and/or the insurance carriers will often have rules/requirements for coverage.  (For example, the provider might be required to have the first visit be an in-office visit.)

It is important to understand that rules and regulations can vary state-to-state and to understand the rules and regulations of the state(s) your patients are in.

What Should I Know about Getting a Telemedicine Endorsement?

The great news is that, typically, adding a telemedicine endorsement does not require adding additional premium to the policy.  Most often, providers just need to complete a telemedicine supplemental application to be included with their medical malpractice insurance application.

The application usually asks for the provider to describe the nature of the practice, number of hours per week doing telemedicine, and how the provider will handle emergencies.
