What Is Medical Director Insurance?

Medical Director insurance covers MDs and DOs for their work largely supervising a medical practice or a medical center.

There are typically two types of Medical Director policies available:

  • Policies with coverage that excludes direct patient care
  • Policies with coverage that includes direct patient care
  • Usually the direct patient care is limited to a certain number of patients or a percentage of the doctor's time overall
  • This coverage is not intended to be your primary medical malpractice insurance
  • It is often used to allow the Medical Director to fill in and/or see a small number of patients in the practice
  • Most policies may cover up to 25% of a doctor's time to practice direct patient care

The most common and least expensive type of policy is the one that
excludes direct patient care.

Do I Need Medical Director Insurance If I Have Medical Malpractice Insurance?

Do I Need Both?

Generally speaking, most standard medical malpractice insurance policies do not cover Medical Directors.  That said, it varies state-to-state and insurance company-to-insurance company.  So, you should always check with your insurance agent about your unique situation.

If you are providing a significant amount of direct patient care, and also serving in the role as Medical Director at the same organization, you will most likely need both types of coverage.

Are You Moonlighting as a Medical Director?

  • If you accept a moonlighting position as a Medical Director at an institution/organization different from your full-time position, you will need separate Medical Director coverage.

  • Do not assume that your medical malpractice insurance from your "day job" will cover your role as a Medical Director elsewhere.

  • As we stated earlier, most standard medical malpractice insurance policies do not cover Medical Directors.
