Coverage Requirements

In the State of Connecticut, medical malpractice insurance coverage is required of physicians by state law.   

The required minimum limits of coverage are $500,000/$1.5M.  This means that healthcare providers must purchase medical malpractice insurance with coverage up to $500,000 per claim, and $1.5M aggregate.  “Aggregate” means that the policy will pay out up to a total of $1.5M in one policy year. 

That said, many medical facilities in Connecticut usually require higher limits of $1M per claim and $4M aggregate of their practitioners.

What is the Med Mal Climate Like in Connecticut?

Unfortunately, there has not been a lot of tort reform in the state of Connecticut.  Thus, the state isn’t especially friendly towards physicians facing a claim. 

The Statute of Limitations in Connecticut is 2 years from the date of the injury or discovery.
